AIMIM wins the second seat in the municipality of Bharuch | Surat News

Bharuch / Surat: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) led by Asaduddin Owaisi won the by-election for Ward 10 of Bharuch Municipality on Tuesday. The headquarters has been a stronghold of Congress for the past four decades.
This is the second victory of the AIMIM candidate in Bharuch. In the 2020 municipal elections, Fahim Sheikh won from Ward 10.
The election was made necessary due to the passing of Asma Sheikh, who won on a Ward 10 Congress ticket in last year’s election.
AIMIM candidate Sadikabibi Shahnawaz Sheikh won with 1,809 votes, beating his closest rival Fatima Fazal Ahmed Patel of the BJP by a margin of 1,409 votes. Congress candidate Sayrabanu Soyeb Sheikh won 1,303 votes, while the Aam Admi Party (AAP) candidate only received 180 votes in his favor.
Tej Pritsingh Sokhi, Chairman of the Bharuch City Congress Committee, said: “The result is surprising for us because the area was always behind the congress. We will do some soul-searching and work to strengthen the party.
The municipality of Bharuch has 44 members including 31 from BJP, 10 from Congress, two from AIMIM and one independent.
Meanwhile, the BJP retained the seat of Nikora from Bharuch Taluka Panchayat. The election for the seat had become vacant following the death of elected official Dharmistha Patel who died of Covid-19 last year.
