Alysha Collett steps into the deep end and returns to Group 1 races at Randwick next weekend.
Fit jockey Alysha Collett joins Sydney’s top jockeys and will ride at Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day next Saturday.
Collett has been the star quality of the non-Greater Sydney jockeys region this season, having already won 25 winners.
Only Australia’s top jockey James McDonald has ridden more NSW winners this season with 34.
Collett, sister of established Sydney runner Jason, clinched two laps in the Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan for Chris Waller.
Horses trained by Waller, Collett, will move up in the trait group. Groups 1 remain unknown but will be slight chances.
“After next Saturday I will try to stay in Sydney,” Collett said.
“I can ride light which is good this time of year.
“I might even get lucky and things will open up again in the not too distant future.
“I’m just going to take it week by week and see how things go.
“I can roll 52, 53 kilos, week after week. “
Collett has been back in Australia since fall 2020 when she left Singapore when the Asian racing center closed races due to Covid.
The Group 1 winner Kiwi struggled to find any winners on her return to Australia, but this year the momentum has started to take shape and in recent times she has become the jockey of choice in her region. .
Its 25 winners came in to better than 16.5% with 12 of this season’s winners for the powerful Operation Peter and Paul Snowden.
“It’s taken me a while to get back into things since I came back from Singapore,” said Collett.
“I hadn’t ridden for about a year and a half due to a back injury and the racing style is very different.
“Looking back, it took me longer than expected to condition my body and the race is a lot more tactical here.
“In Singapore they tend to jump and run whereas here every race is different so you have to be very active.
“It’s something I’ve really focused on over the past six months as well as working out in the gym and it all seems to be paying off.”
Collett is managed by Shaun Flaherty who can be contacted on 0410 996 817.
