Antonio Martinez and Vivian Moreno Discuss Equity and More in District 8 City Council Forum

Just a week before ballots begin hitting mailboxes, San Diego City Council District 8 candidates Antonio Martinez — a congressional community representative — and incumbent council member Vivian Moreno answered questions from the San Diego Union-Tribune editorial board and community members in a lively forum at the San Library in Ysidoro.

The district stretches from Sherman Heights, Barrio Logan and Logan Heights south to San Ysidro, Otay Mesa and Nestor.

The conversation, led by associate editor and columnist Laura Castañeda, touched on a number of equity issues in a neighborhood whose residents, the two candidates said, sometimes feel neglected. Martinez and Moreno weighed in on issues including infrastructure, housing and transportation, as well as the disproportionate impacts of the pandemic on San Ysidro residents and businesses. They also answered questions about the state’s drought.

Check out UT Opinion’s candidate surveys for more on Martinez and Moreno. As the only two candidates in the June 7 ballot, they will automatically advance to the second round of elections on November 8.

The District 8 forum was the second in a series of in-person candidate events the San Diego Union-Tribune editorial board is hosting ahead of the June 7 primary election. Follow previous events online or join us in person or via facebook live for future forums.
