“One individual shot the other,” APS spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said. “Others, who were witnesses nearby, rushed to the scene, attempted rescue measures for the injured person. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene.”
The Old Town district is a big tourist attraction, especially during the Balloon Fiesta. Police said the victim lived in Albuquerque.
“I want to point out that the deceased – although we have provisional ID – appears to be someone from Albuquerque and not a tourist to the area, so there is nothing related to Old Town and to tourism in particular, âsaid Gallegos.
People who live and work in the area were shocked by the shooting.
âIt’s not the sort of thing we would expect,â said Steve Stein, who lives in the area. “At least our neighborhood, right across the street, has a relatively low crime rate, so we don’t expect that level of violence.”
This is the second fatal shooting in front of Central Grill in recent years. In 2019, Elijah Amos reportedly shot dead Isaac Candelaria after trying to steal his bike at a bus stop.
âWe keep seeing gun violence, road rage is sort of the epitome of that, where you have confrontations on the road and it turns – you never know when someone is going to get a gun and what might. happen, âsaid Gallegos.
As for Wednesday’s shooting, police are watching surveillance video and questioning witnesses. Police have yet to release any information about the suspect or the vehicle in which they took off.
