Autonomous shuttles ply the roads of Metro Atlanta – WSB-TV Channel 2

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA – The future is here, specifically in Gwinnett County.

Autonomous shuttles will soon be carrying people around a metropolitan city of Atlanta. Peachtree Corners introduced the new autonomous vehicles on Wednesday.

Peachtree Corners and its “curiosity lab” are the first in the world to deploy autonomous shuttles on a city street, using two different vehicles, coming from two different companies on the same road and talking to each other via a 5G network.

“On a public road, interacting with human-driven automobiles, not a closed course. In the real world and four autonomous shuttles will operate at the same time, ”said Brian Johnson, City Manager of Peachtree Corners.

There is no driver on these shuttles, but there is an attendant to push a button and accompany the ride, although there is an emergency stop button and a video game controller, just in case.

But is it sure? Several sensors and cameras interact with the road and its surroundings. Autonomous shuttles handle all of this faster than humans and without distractions.

“It reads the lines and actually has its own LIDAR, a radar, its own eyes scanning objects 360 degrees,” Johnson said.

With a launch event and demo this week, the real test begins Monday, October 18, with shuttles running Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. along the Technology Parkway.

“Here you have signal interruptions, you have people doing crazy things, you have buildings, slopes, curves, this is the real world,” Johnson said.

The city does not know how many will roll, as this is more of a novelty at the moment and not a demand. But it is a proving ground. Seven brewery stops at hotel, town hall, 15-20 mph on the three mile loop.

“I encourage everyone to go out, take a walk tomorrow. Because it happens, ”Johnson said.

While it may still be years before you see this technology on your street, Marta’s CEO was there to learn and observe how to possibly take the autonomous shuttles and deploy them in the Atlanta subway in the near vicinity. to come up.
