Charlotte FC sign attacking midfielder Riley McGree from Adelaide United and loan him to Birmingham City

TRANSFER TRACKING STATUS: Signature

Charlotte FC have signed attacking midfielder Riley McGree from Adelaide United, the club announced on Monday. McGree will go 2020/21 on loan with Birmingham City in the Premier League.

McGree, 21, started his career in Adelaide through their academy, but moved to Club Brugge in Belgium before returning to Adelaide. He has made 76 appearances in Australia’s A-League, including a breakout campaign last year with 10 goals and five assists in 23 appearances.

“Riley is a young international player who has already proven himself to be an impressive goalscorer,” sporting director Zoran Krneta said in a club statement. “We are building our squad with young talent that matches the aggressive playstyle and intensity of play that our fans will love to watch. Riley is a perfect fit for us, and we’re delighted to secure his signing for Charlotte FC with so many clubs in Europe fighting for him. His loan transfer to Birmingham City in the Premier League, one of the best competitive football leagues in the world, will help Riley rise to the top of his game and prepare for our departure in 2022. “

McGree has represented Australia at youth level and is Charlotte’s second signing, following Sergio Ruiz earlier this summer. Ruiz is currently on loan at the Spanish second level. Birmingham finished 20th (out of 24) in the league last season but have yet to lose in four games this season (one win, three draws).

“I am so excited to be a part of something special with Charlotte FC,” said McGree. “The opportunity to play in a fast growing league like MLS is perfect for me and I will give my all to make our fans proud. After speaking with Zoran and learning about the ambitions and goals of the club, I couldn’t be more excited to join this team.

Charlotte will join MLS in 2022.
