Eskom will restore power to Parys, Vredefort once debt is settled

Eskom said they issued a quote for the municipality and in meetings held last week – Ngwathe agreed to pay for the repairs.

JOHANNESBURG — Eskom said it will only restore power supplies to parts of Parys and Vredefort in the Free State once the local municipality of Ngwathe settles its debt with the utility.

It comes after the municipality’s grid was overloaded, causing electric utility equipment to trip and plunge thousands of homes into darkness on Friday.

Eskom said they issued a quote for the municipality and in meetings held this week – Ngwathe agreed to pay for the repairs.

However, the electric utility said it was ready to begin restoration work, but they have yet to receive the promised payment.

Eskom in the Free State Spokesman. Stephanie Jansen van Rensburg said she was warned about the problem more than four years ago.

“Since 2018, we have been negotiating with the municipality to increase the maximum notified demand. On numerous occasions, the municipality has been warned that their continued exceeding of this NMD puts a strain on Eskom’s equipment and will eventually damage our network. “.

Jansen van Rensburg said no pay, no job.

“Eskom is absolutely unable to finance the repair of the damage caused by the non-paying municipality and therefore only proceeds with the required work once payment has been received”
