KOTTAYAM: Metropolitan Mathews Mar Severios is expected to be the next Eastern Catholicos and the supreme head of the Syrian Orthodox Church in Malankara. The Metropolitan was unanimously nominated for the highest post at the Episcopal Synod which was held at the church headquarters in Devalokam, Kottayam on Thursday. The synod is made up of the 24 metropolitans of the church who appointed Severios as the next Catholicos. Once the meeting of the Malankara association is held in Parumala on October 14 and ratifies the synod’s decision, Severios will be officially ordained Catholicos.
An official announcement on the synod’s decision is expected to be made by the church after a church management committee meeting on Friday. Severios (72) will succeed Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, who died in July this year. Severios, originally from Vazhoor in the district of Kottayam, is currently the Metropolitan of the Diocese of Kandanad West. He is also the former secretary of the episcopal synod.
Severios obtained his BD from Serampore University and did his graduate studies in theology at the Theological Academy in Leningrad, Russia. Thereupon he joined the Oriental Institute in Rome and obtained his Masters and Doctorate there.
He is a well-known teacher and faculty member of Kottayam Orthodox Seminary. A philanthropist, he works tirelessly to uplift the poor, especially women. He has started many businesses to help provide employment opportunities for economically backward class women.
