Montefilia and She’s Ideel favorites emerge in The Metropolitan

The draw was not favorable to the market leaders of the Metropolitan.

A field of 18 and three emergencies was declared to face Saturday’s $ 750,000 Group 1 starter The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick.

The Metropolitan was introduced to the Sydney racing scene 12 months after Epsom’s handicap in 1966 in a two-mile competition. The first winner was Bylong.

In 1892 the distance was reduced to 2400 m and then increased to 2600 m in 1919 and remained on this route until it was again reduced to 2400 m in 2000.

The Metropolitan is Sydney’s first spring race and offers the winner the chance to improve their prospects for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup by way of a weight penalty.

The last horse to win the Metropolitan / Caulfield Cup double was Tawqeet in 2006, while Macdougal in 1959 no longer had a horse that had won The Metropolitan / Melbourne Cup double in the same year.

As of 2021, there are six locally bred stayers in the race, including three from the Shaky Islands. The other 12 acceptors are high per hour from the northern hemisphere, 11 from Europe and one from Japan.

Sydney head coach Chris Waller has six of the 21 acceptors – Shared Ambition, Dashing Willoughby, Kukeracha, Great House, No Compromise and Charms Star.

David Payne rides the $ 5 favorite Montefilia while Bjorn Baker holds a strong hand that includes $ 6 luck She’s Ideel and teammate Harpo Marx.
