South Park THEORY: Butters will destroy the city

The South Park Season 25 finale hints that Butters Stotch will become the ultimate destroyer and take down the Colorado town the way he always wanted.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for South Park’s Season 25 finale, “Credigree Weed St. Patrick’s Day Special,” available now on Comedy Central.

Butters Stotch cut a pretty intriguing figure throughout South Park the story. He is generally sweet, shy and tries to please everyone, which is why Eric Cartman has bullied him in the past. Cartman also played pranks on him and used him in genocidal schemes to achieve power as Cartman did not have a stable family life.

Butters agreed to these plans, however, because he felt sorry for Cartman – no matter how selfish and spoiled Cartman turned out. However, South ParkThe Season 25 finale shaped Butters to turn the tide and become the ultimate monster. And even more ominous, someone who will likely destroy Colorado’s snowy town in revenge for all the times he’s been wronged.

Butters has a dark side to him, seen through his alter-ego Professor Chaos who promised to raze the city. Nothing came of this super-villain thing, but other stories have hinted that Butters had tremendous power. A Possible Future saw him spread the word about NFTs and bring society crashing down by pouring money into intangible art, while as Mexican savior Mantequilla he showed he could convince the acolytes to adore him.

However, he was unlucky in his personal life, as evidenced by his tap dancing causing a tragedy that claimed many lives. Outside of school, his parents also mistreat him, which is why he likes to be a clumsy loner playing with his toys and singing in his garden. These happy pursuits keep him from becoming one of the town’s emo teenagers.

But wherever Butters goes, danger follows. When he took pictures for Cartman’s real estate project, his photos caused a rival agency to imitate his style…which led workers literally breaking his back posing and a gun war breaks out in town. The plot was funny because he was so distant and didn’t know what he started, but it spoke to Butters inadvertently destroying South Park. So what could he do if he ever intentionally try?

The full extent of Butters’ power was revealed in the season 25 finale for St. Patrick’s Day. He continued to educate people over the holidays, even preaching about how Christianity influenced him – only to be imprisoned for pinching people who didn’t wear green. In prison, Butters’ prayers and support helped Randy Marsh gain magical powers… which led to the owner of Tegridy Farms going on a rampage in the town he usually heals.

Randy’s behavior was further proof that Butters creates disasters and must be connected to something ethereal. He was eventually sentenced to the garbage department, picking up litter from the streets for five years as part of community service. But rather than finding the positive in the outcome as many fans assumed, the misunderstood Butters cursed the church and the town. It hints that the time is coming when he will really make South Park pay for his sins, giving the show a bigger villain – and one he might need now that it looks like Cartman has been redeemed.
