Athens Metro Line 4 entered a new phase this week after the Municipality of Athens announced that it would carry out landscaping work after the completion of the project.

The municipality and the Greek Ministry of the Environment signed a cooperation protocol (MoC) on Monday which, among other things, provides for the planting of 2,000 trees and the reinstallation of urban infrastructure once the project is completed. The MoC defines the terms and conditions of the project with the aim of creating as little inconvenience as possible for residents and visitors to the city.

Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis said that “the most important project in the country is underway; a project that future generations will be grateful for.”

Athens Metro Line 4 U-shaped: 38.2 km with 35 stations

Athens Metro Line 4 will be 38.2 km long and cover the needs of at least 341,000 daily commuters by 2030 through 35 stations.

The ambitious project aims to:

– decongest densely populated areas of the Greek capital such as Veikou-Galatsi, Kypseli, Kessariani, Ilissia, Zografou and Goudi

– supplementing the existing lines in Athens with three new stations: Exarchia, Academia and Kolonaki

– serving important sites in the city such as hospitals and universities

– increase the metro network with crossing stations and decongest existing central metro stations.

With a budget of 1.2 billion euros, the construction of metro line 4 was undertaken by French multinational rolling stock manufacturer Alstom SA.
