Chattanooga man Thomas Henshall, Jr., 37, was arrested in Nashville after driving with a dead body, believed to be his mother, Danielle Bowen, 60.
Authorities from the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department said Henshall arrived at VA Medical Center in Nashville at 5:15 p.m. Saturday with the body wrapped and / or rolled up in a tarp in the back of his truck. Henshall claimed her mother committed suicide and found her in a wooded area of Chattanooga. According to Henshall and his girlfriend, whom he picked up at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with the body already in the truck, they stopped to get food, gas and coffee before heading to a VA medical center in Chattanooga and saw it was closed. They ended up making their way to the VA Medical Center in Nashville, passing several hospitals and law enforcement centers along the way.
The evidence tampering charge stems from Henshall touching and concealing the victim’s body. During an interview with Madison Meiss, MNPD homicide detective, Henshall said he was right next to his mother when she killed herself; however, he told his girlfriend that he had discovered the victim in the woods. When asked how his mother got a gun, Henshall invoked his Miranda rights and ended the interview.
The positive identification of the body in the tarpaulin will be made during an autopsy.
The Nashville Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Unit provided information on the case to authorities in Chattanooga and the TBI for follow-up investigation in eastern Tennessee.
Henshall is jailed in Nashville in lieu of $ 80,000 bail.
