Vivid images show Market Street before the Arndale – and how the mall evolved



It’s been over 40 years since Manchester Arndale officially opened – but life on Market Street and the city around it is constantly changing.

From rooftop houses and a bus station below to its popular indoor market, Manchester Arndale has changed over time since it was built in the mid-1970s.

But Market Street didn’t always look like what we know today, and many generations will remember what it was like before the famous mall existed.

We searched the visual archives at Manchester Metropolitan University to find some photos of the center from the past 43 years – showing the Arndale inside and out.

The majority of these photographs are from our Mirrorpix and the Manchester Metropolitan University Visual Archives and show a number of photos of Market Street before the center, as well as scenes from its construction and images of what it was doing. is today.
